It all started many years ago when I was watching a American TV program which featured a Shar-Pei. Well it was love at first sight and nothing has changed since then. As the breed was basically unheard of here in South Africa, I had to look elsewhere for acquiring a Shar-Pei. In 1990 I imported my first Shar-Pei, Cinnamon, Empress and Lucrezia from Khambaliq Kennels in Italy . They were the first Shar-Pei to be registered with the Kennel Union of Southern Africa (KUSA) and, under the Waggitail affix, I was the first Shar-Pei breeder to be registered with KUSA. Since those early beginnings, my involvement in owning, showing and breeding Shar-Pei has gone from strength to strength. To maintain and improve the high standards of my breeding program I regularly import dogs from America. Proof that my breeding program is successful can be found in the fact that Waggitail Shar-Pei regularly achieve a Utility-group placing at shows. History was made on 30 March 2002, when USA/SA Ch.Good Fortune Goto Guy at Waggitail was the first Shar-Pei in South Africa to win a Best in Show at the Transvaal Midlands Kennel Club Championship Show, under Canadian judges Mr. T Burke and Mr. J Kearley. By doing so, he put the breed 'on the map' in South Africa. I am a member of the Cape Utility Dog Club and is also currently serving on the committee as the Club secretary. As a registered Learner judge, I am busy going through the lengthy process of becoming a KUSA approved Utility-group judge. At Waggitail Kennel I strive to breed Shar-Pei that not only do well at shows, but also make excellent family pets with excellent, loving temperaments. Anybody looking for a Shar-Pei puppy or just wanting more information is welcome to contact me. |
